Open

Open year-round, first-come, first-served with no reservations or fees. Mud season (typically March through May) may make trails soft; hikers should avoid muddy sections to protect treadway. Access road (FR 201) to the trailhead may be seasonally impassable in winter and early spring.

About

Emily Proctor Shelter is a classic three-sided Long Trail shelter located at the junction of the Emily Proctor Trail and the Long Trail within the Breadloaf Wilderness. The shelter underwent a full restoration in 2021 by the Green Mountain Club and now features a new universally accessible moldering privy, replacing the old pit privy with a more sustainable composting system. The shelter is reached via a 3.7-mile hike on the Emily Proctor Trail, which follows an old woods road before entering the Breadloaf Wilderness and making a steep, rocky ascent to the clearing where the shelter sits. The site can also be incorporated into a 13-mile loop with Cooley Glen Shelter via the Long Trail, crossing Mount Roosevelt and Mount Wilson with about 2,085 feet of elevation gain. As a wilderness site, Emily Proctor operates under Leave No Trace principles. Hikers must treat or filter water from nearby sources, pack out all trash, and follow bear-safe food storage practices. The shelter is first-come, first-served with no reservations and no fees.
