About
Town Creek Hiker-Biker Campsite sits at mile 162.1 along the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath in Allegany County, Maryland. This primitive walk-in campsite serves hikers and cyclists traveling the 184.5-mile towpath between Georgetown and Cumberland. The site is part of a network of approximately 31 hiker-biker campsites spaced roughly every 5-7 miles along the canal. The campsite provides basic amenities including a chemical toilet, picnic table, and grill. A hand pump provides non-potable water that must be filtered, chemically treated, or boiled before consumption. The site operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fee required, but overnight stays are limited to one night per site per trip to ensure availability for through-travelers. The campsite is located near the Potomac River and subject to flooding after heavy rains. Fires are restricted to the provided grill, and firewood may be collected on-site but cannot be brought into the park from outside. Cell phone reception may be limited. This is a primitive camping experience suitable for self-sufficient travelers on multi-day trips along the towpath.
