About

Sorrel Ridge Hiker-Biker Campsite is one of many primitive campsites spaced roughly every 5-7 miles along the 184.5-mile C&O Canal towpath. Located at mile marker 154.1 in Allegany County, Maryland, it provides a convenient overnight stop for long-distance hikers and cyclists traveling the historic towpath between Georgetown and Cumberland. The campsite includes a chemical toilet, picnic table, firepit, and non-potable well water. The water is not treated and must be filtered, chemically treated, or boiled before drinking or cooking. Water is turned off from mid-November to mid-April. Fires are permitted only in the provided grills and fire rings; firewood may be collected from dead grounded material in the park, but bringing outside firewood is prohibited. This is a walk-in tent site located away from vehicle access. No reservations or fees are required, but stays are limited to one night per trip. Campers must pack out all trash. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 PM to 6 AM. Pets are welcome but must remain leashed at all times.
