Split Rock Lighthouse State Park Remote Campsites

Open — Open year-round for reservations. Wheeled carts for transporting gear to cart-in sites are provided seasonally; winter campers should bring sleds or backpacks.

About

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park's remote camping area provides a unique wilderness experience along the North Shore of Lake Superior. The campground consists of 20 cart-in campsites located within 2,000 feet of the parking area, with wheeled carts provided seasonally to transport gear. Four backpack campsites are positioned 0.5 to 2 miles from parking, with two accessible from the Lake Superior Water Trail for kayakers. Each site features a fire ring, picnic table, tent pad, and animal-proof food box, offering privacy and seclusion among the rocky shoreline and forested terrain. The cart-in campsites are scattered between Lake Superior and Day Hill, with several sites positioned directly on the rocky lakeshore. Access to scenic trails including the Superior Hiking Trail and Gitchi-Gami State Trail is convenient from the campground. Bob's Staircase leads from the campground down to a cobble beach, while the Day Hill Trail climbs to panoramic views of the lighthouse and Corundum Point. During winter, campers must bring sleds or backpacks as wheeled carts are not provided. The remote campsites offer a more primitive experience compared to the park's developed Shipwreck Creek Campground, with vault toilets available year-round and seasonal shower facilities.
