Split Rock Lighthouse State Park offers four reservable remote backpack campsites situated directly on Lake Superior's dramatic North Shore. These primitive sites provide a true backcountry experience while remaining within one of Minnesota's most scenic state parks. The sites range from 1/2 to 2 miles from the cart-in campground parking area, requiring visitors to hike in with their gear. Two of the four sites are easily accessible to kayakers paddling the Lake Superior Water Trail, making them excellent stopping points for water-based travelers. All sites connect to the Superior Hiking Trail, drawing thru-hikers and day-hikers alike. Each remote campsite includes a fire ring, picnic table, tent pad, and animal-proof food storage box to protect against bears and other wildlife. Facilities are rustic with vault toilets serving the remote area. Campers must pack in their own water or fill up at the cart-in campground before hiking out. All trash must be packed out. The remote sites offer solitude and direct access to Lake Superior's rocky shoreline, with opportunities to watch sunrise over the lake and explore the park's historic lighthouse during your stay.

Directions

From Duluth, take Highway 61 northeast approximately 47 miles. The park entrance is located at 3755 Split Rock Lighthouse Road. Remote campsites are accessed by hiking from the cart-in campground parking area.
