About
Spillway Picnic Shelters is a day-use recreation area situated at the southern end of Lake Shelbyville, just below the dam where it connects to the Kaskaskia River. The facility features two reservable group picnic shelters: Shelter #1 includes 6 picnic tables, a group grill and fireplace, attached flush restrooms, overhead lights, and 4 electrical outlets; Shelter #2 offers 6 picnic tables and a group grill without electricity, with nearby restrooms and a prime view of the dam.
This area is popular for shoreline and kayak fishing, featuring a handicap accessible fishing pier and fish cleaning station. Anglers can target catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, muskie, walleye, white bass, and bluegill. The General Dacey Trail, a multi-use biking and walking trail, runs through the area and extends through the south end of the lake, spillway, dam, and into Shelbyville's city park. A playground is available for children, and the area provides excellent views of the Lake Shelbyville Dam. The surrounding landscape is home to diverse wildlife including songbirds, shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors, white-tail deer, and various small mammals.
