About
Dam East Picnic Shelter is a day-use recreation area located on the southern shore of Lake Shelbyville in central Illinois. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this facility serves as a hub for outdoor recreation and education at the lake. The centerpiece is the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center, which features an exhibit hall, butterfly garden, and panoramic views of the lake.
The General Dacey Trail, a multi-use biking and walking trail, extends through the south end of the lake, across the spillway and dam, and into the city park. Shoreline access provides fishing opportunities for catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, muskie, walleye, white bass, and bluegill. The facility includes multiple picnic areas throughout the grounds, a playground for children, volleyball net, and horseshoe pits.
The day-use area is shaded by oak and hickory trees with views overlooking the lake. Wildlife viewing opportunities include numerous songbirds, shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors, white-tailed deer, turkeys, and seasonal bald eagle sightings. The facility is located one mile east of Shelbyville on State Route 16, offering convenient access to both lake recreation and the nearby town.
