Opossum Creek Recreation Area sits on the western shore of Lake Shelbyville in Shelby County, Illinois, offering a quiet campground surrounded by oak and hickory forests. The facility features mostly electric campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents, along with several tent-only electric sites. Modern amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, a playground, and a dump station. The campground overlooks the lake shore and provides abundant shade beneath mature trees. Lake Shelbyville offers excellent fishing opportunities for catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, muskie, walleye, white bass, and bluegill. Opossum Creek features a dedicated fishing pond for children age 12 and under with an accessible fishing dock. The campground provides easy access to boating, swimming, and other water recreation. Nearby hunting areas offer opportunities for quail, rabbit, pheasant, deer, dove, turkey, waterfowl, and woodcock. The lake region is home to numerous songbirds, shorebirds, waterfowl, and raptors, along with mammals such as white-tailed deer, cottontail rabbit, gray and fox squirrel, muskrat, and mink. Fall foliage displays vibrant colors of red, orange, purple, and yellow, while prairie flowers dot the landscape in spring and summer. Wolf Creek State Park, Woods Lake Waterfowl Refuge, and Okaw Bluff Wetlands Complex are nearby locations for wildlife watching and birding.

Directions

From Shelbyville, take State Route 128 north for 3.5 miles. Turn right onto County Road 1650 N. Continue nearly a mile to County Road 1880 E. Turn right and travel 0.5 mile to County Road 1600 N. Turn right again and drive one mile into the Opossum Creek facility.
