About
Spectacle Lake Campground is a medium-sized established campground with 24 sites situated along Forest Road 250 in the Conejos Peak Ranger District of Rio Grande National Forest. The campground features 13 pull-through sites and 2 sites with parking for two-car groups, all equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. Most campsites offer panoramic views of towering cliff walls that dominate the surrounding landscape. The campground provides access to year-round fishing opportunities at Spectacle Lake (stocked rainbows, no boats allowed) located across the road, as well as the Conejos River. Winter ice-fishing is popular on the lake. Several hiking trails are accessible from the campground, including Spectacle Lake Trail #730 (begins 1/2 mile south on FR 250), Ruybalid Trail #855, and Notch Trail #729. The facility includes two vault toilets and refuse containers, but potable water is not available on-site. Firewood is limited in the area. The campground is managed by Scenic Canyons under permit from the USFS.
Directions
From Antonito, take US 285 south 0.3 miles to Highway 17. Continue straight on Highway 17 and go 21.9 miles to Platoro sign at Forest Road 250. Turn right onto FR 250 (dirt road) and go 6.3 miles to campground sign. Turn left at sign into campground.
