About
Elk Creek Overflow Campground is part of the larger Elk Creek Campground complex in the Rio Grande National Forest, located approximately 23 miles west of Antonito, Colorado at 8,500 feet elevation. The overflow loop contains 8 non-reservable campsites (sites 31-38) available on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground is lightly wooded with spruce and ponderosa pines, with a grassy understory and some sites positioned along Elk Creek. This campground serves as an excellent base for both destination and transient campers. The South San Juan Wilderness is conveniently accessible from the campground, offering backcountry hiking opportunities. Anglers can access both the Conejos River and Elk Creek for stream fishing. The area is bear country, requiring proper food storage practices. The campground is located in scenic Conejos Canyon and can be combined with a visit to the historic Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in nearby Antonito, which offers a 64-mile steam train journey through abandoned mining towns. Access is via State Route 17 and a short dirt road, though motorized travel may be limited by snow and seasonal road closures from mid-March to mid-May.
Directions
From Antonito, take US 285 south 0.3 miles to State Route 17. Continue straight on Route 17 for 22.6 miles to the campground sign. Turn right onto dirt road and go 0.1 miles to a T intersection. Turn left and go 0.4 miles to a Y intersection. Bear right and proceed into campground.
