Built in 1963 as base quarters for Forest Service crews, the cabin now serves as a rustic rental getaway. The cabin features a combination kitchen/living room, bedroom, and bathroom, with two bunkbeds that accommodate up to six people. All appliances including the heater, stove, refrigerator, and lighting are propane-powered. The cabin includes entry ramps and wheelchair-accessible facilities in the bathroom and kitchen, along with a flush toilet and shower. The surrounding area offers diverse recreation opportunities. Anglers can fish Iron Creek, Treasure Creek, and Platoro Reservoir for kokanee salmon, rainbow, and brown trout. The nearby South San Juan Wilderness provides excellent hiking opportunities through diverse forest ecosystems ranging from lodgepole pine and aspen to Engelmann spruce and alpine tundra. Big game hunting is popular in fall, while winter brings snowmobiling, skiing, and snowshoeing. The historic ghost town of Summitville, where gold was first discovered in 1870, is nearby. Guests must provide their own food, sleeping bags, linens, towels, dish soap, matches, first aid kit, toilet paper, and garbage bags. All trash must be packed out. The town of Platoro offers amenities including a grocery store, lodge, and outfitter services. Access is seasonal and dependent on road conditions, typically available less than six months per year when snow levels permit driving.
