About
Elk Creek Campground is located in Conejos County at 8,500 ft elevation, tucked into the lower portion of Conejos Canyon just off Highway 17. The campground is lightly wooded with spruce and ponderosa pine, with a grassy understory and several sites positioned alongside Elk Creek. The main loop has 31 sites with picnic tables and fire rings, while an overflow loop (sites 31-38) offers more primitive camping without tables. Fishing for brown and rainbow trout is available in nearby Elk Creek and the Conejos River. The Elk Creek Trail (#731) and Duck Lake Trail (#732) depart from nearby trailheads, providing intermediate-level access to the South San Juan Wilderness, Dipping Lakes, and Duck Lake. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, accessible from Antonito, offers a 64-mile steam train journey through historic mining country. The campground accommodates RVs up to 45 feet with 6 pull-through sites available. Site 10 offers 30-amp electric service. A 14-day stay limit is enforced.
Directions
From Antonito, CO, take US 285 south 0.3 miles to Hwy 17. Continue straight on Hwy 17 for 22.6 miles to the campground sign. Turn right onto the dirt road and go 0.1 miles to a T intersection. Turn left, go 0.4 miles to a Y intersection. Bear right and turn into the campground.
