About

Mecca Flat Campground is a primitive Bureau of Land Management site situated along the Deschutes Wild and Scenic River in central Oregon, roughly 12 miles north of Madras. The campground features 13 individual campsites and one group area spread along the riverbank, providing access to excellent fishing and paddling opportunities on this classic high-desert river. The 7-mile Trout Creek Trail begins at the campground's southern end and follows the river north to Trout Creek Campground, offering hiking and mountain biking through terrain once traversed by the historic Deschutes Railroad. Remnants of a now-abandoned railroad tunnel can be spotted near Highway 26, though the structure is unstable and should be avoided. Amenities are minimal: a single ADA-accessible vault toilet serves the campground, but there is no potable water, trash service, or cell phone coverage. Goathead (puncturevine) is present in the area and poses a hazard to pets and bicycle tires. The 1.6-mile access road is narrow with limited pullouts, requiring extra caution when towing trailers.

Directions

From Madras, Oregon: Drive 12.4 miles north on State Highway 26. Immediately before the Deschutes River crossing, turn right at the brown Mecca Flat Road sign. Follow this narrow single-lane road 1.6 miles to the campground. Use caution when pulling a trailer.
