About

South Creek Campground offers a quiet, primitive camping experience at 3,100 feet elevation in the Methow Valley region of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. With only four campsites, this small campground sits near the confluence of South Creek and the Twisp River, surrounded by forested terrain that provides access to some of the best hiking in the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness. The campground serves as an excellent staging area for backcountry exploration. From here, hikers can access the Twisp River Trail 440 as well as the South Creek Trail 401 and nearby Scatter Creek Trail 427, both of which lead into the wilderness. The area also offers opportunities for bicycling, scenic drives, horseback riding, and stream fishing. Facilities are basic: vault toilets and picnic tables are provided, but there is no potable water and no trash service. Campers must filter or treat water from nearby sources and pack out all trash following Leave No Trace principles. Each site accommodates a maximum of 2 vehicles and either 2 tents or 1 RV with 1 tent. The access road (Forest Road 4440) has several washouts and is not recommended for trailers or low clearance vehicles.

Directions

From Twisp, drive west on paved Twisp River Road (County Road 9114) for 12 miles until it becomes paved Forest Service Road 44. Continue straight on FS Road 44 for 5 miles until the road turns to gravel and becomes Forest Service Road 4440. Continue straight on FS Road 4440 for an additional 4 miles to South Creek Campground (22 miles total from Twisp).
