About
Purple Point Campground is one of three frontcountry campgrounds in the Stehekin Valley at the northern end of Lake Chelan. The six walk-in tent sites are situated near the lake, approximately a ten-minute walk from the boat dock at Stehekin Landing. Most sites are located close to the paved road. The campground provides vault toilets year-round, with flush toilets and potable water available seasonally. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and bear-resistant food lockers are provided for mandatory food storage. Stehekin is a remote community with no road connections to the outside world. Visitors must arrive by foot (via long-distance trails), passenger ferry from Chelan, private boat, or floatplane. The Lady of the Lake ferry provides year-round service from Chelan. Hikers can access several trails near the campground, including the Imus Trail, Purple Creek Trail, and Lakeshore Trail. The Stehekin Valley Road extends further up-valley, where additional trails lead into North Cascades National Park backcountry. A free seasonal shuttle bus provides transportation up the valley. Nearby attractions include Rainbow Falls, a 312-foot waterfall along the Stehekin Valley Road, and the historic Buckner Orchard where visitors can pick apples in autumn. Lake Chelan offers swimming, fishing, and boating, though water temperatures hover around 45°F. Black bears inhabit the area, so proper food storage is required at all times.
Directions
No roads connect Stehekin to the rest of Washington. Access is by foot, boat, or floatplane only. Most visitors take the Lady of the Lake passenger ferry from the town of Chelan. Purple Point Campground is a ten-minute walk north from the boat dock at Stehekin Landing along a paved road.
