Special Weather Statement issued January 18 at 11:37PM EST by NWS Columbia SC

January 18th, 11:37 PM — 8:00 AM

Lingering moisture and puddles from earlier rainfall will create patchy black ice on area roads during the overnight and early morning hours. Icy spots could form on paved surfaces such as bridges and overpasses, primary and secondary roads, parking lots, sidewalks and driveways. Some isolated areas of freezing fog are also possible overnight and in the early morning which could lead to some additional slick spots, especially on elevated roadways.

About

H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area encompasses 7,000 rolling acres of longleaf pine forest and fields in South Carolina's Sand Hills region. The park serves as a premier destination for equestrian enthusiasts and dog trainers, hosting national-level field trial and retriever competitions. The Barn Loop Campground features 27 sites with water and electric hookups, including one ADA-accessible site located near the clubhouse and bathhouse. Additional primitive campsites are available throughout the property for those seeking a more remote experience. The campground provides two comfort stations with hot showers and an RV dump station. Sites are shaded by large trees with pine-needle ground cover and include fire rings. The park's specialized facilities include stables, horse pens, kennels, and a waterfowl pond. Golf carts are permitted for a nightly fee. The remote location requires traveling several miles down dirt roads through the Sand Hills region, offering visitors a true backcountry experience. Due to the park's designation as a Wildlife Management Area, visitors must wear blaze orange outside the campground during gun and muzzleloader hunting seasons for deer, bear, and hogs. The park's extensive trail system accommodates horses, and pets must be voice-command controlled or leashed within a quarter-mile of the camping area. WiFi and EV charging stations are available.
