Snake Creek Primitive Campgrounds

Closed — Closed for the season. Typically operates May through October. Maximum stay is 14 days.

About

Snake Creek Primitive Campgrounds provides a backcountry camping experience along the Snake Creek River in the southeastern portion of Great Basin National Park. The 12 sites are distributed among several named locations: Monkey Rock, Squirrel Springs, Pinnacles, Eagle Peak, and two trail sites (Shoshone and Johnson Lake) that require a short 0.5-mile hike from the parking lot at the end of Snake Creek Road. The campsites are nestled among scenic aspen groves with dramatic limestone cliffs as a backdrop. This is a true primitive camping experience with no fees and no reservations. All sites are first-come, first-served with a 14-day maximum stay. The campground provides vault toilets seasonally and fire rings at each site, but no water is available. Campers must bring all necessary water and pack out all trash. Fires are only allowed in provided metal fire rings and must use dead wood collected from the ground only. Collection of bristlecone pine wood or any wood above 10,000 feet is prohibited. The primitive nature of Snake Creek Road limits access to vehicles under 30 feet in length. RVs, trailers, and large vehicles over 30 feet are not permitted due to road conditions. Some facilities, including Monkey Rock, Squirrel Springs, and trailhead restrooms, are ADA accessible.
