About

Smokey Boulder Dispersed Camping Area provides rugged, primitive camping opportunities along Smokey Boulder Road (FSR #074) in the Payette National Forest. Located about ten miles north of New Meadows off Highway 95, the area features numerous dispersed sites spread throughout the forested terrain. A vault toilet is available, but there is no potable water, and campers must pack out all trash. Some sites include fire rings and picnic tables, though most do not have these amenities. The area supports multiple recreational activities including horseback riding, OHV road riding, and hunting. This is one of the earlier areas in the forest to become snow-free each spring, attracting campers seeking early-season access to the backcountry. The area is busiest during hunting season in September and October. All camping is first-come, first-served with no reservations. The standard Payette National Forest 14-day stay limit applies, after which campers must relocate at least 5 miles from their original site.

Directions

From New Meadows, travel approximately 10 miles north on Highway 95. Turn west onto Smokey Boulder Road (Forest Service Road 074). Dispersed campsites are located along this road.
