About
Black Lake Campground offers one of the more remote developed camping experiences in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Situated on the edge of Black Lake and immediately adjacent to the Hells Canyon Wilderness, the small 4-site tent campground caters to backpackers and wilderness enthusiasts seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and parking area. The campground provides direct access to excellent backcountry trails. Black Lake-Horse Heaven Trail #214 and Six Lakes Basin Trail #218 both depart from the campground and enter the Hells Canyon Wilderness from its southeast corner. The area sees light use, making it an attractive option for those who value solitude. Access requires navigating a steep, rough road that is not recommended for RVs, trailers, or low-clearance vehicles. From Council, Idaho, travelers follow Hornet Creek Road through the community of Bear, then continue on Forest Roads 105 and 112 past Smith Mountain Lookout to reach the campground. Campers must bring their own water as none is available on site.
Directions
From Riggins, Idaho, go south 60 miles on US Hwy 95 to Council. In Council, leave Hwy 95 in the downtown area and head north/northwest on Hornet Creek Road #002. Continue north past Lafferty Campground to the community of Bear. After Bear, continue north on Road 105 (gravel, suitable for passenger cars) and watch for the split in the road. Stay right on Road #105, do not enter Bear Work Center. Continue 0.5 miles to the intersection with Road #112. Travel on Road #112 heading north/northwest past Smith Mountain Lookout to the end of the road at Black Lake Campground.
