About

Black Lake Campground is a remote, rustic facility with only 4 designated tent sites situated on the edge of Black Lake in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. Adjacent to the Hells Canyon Wilderness, this campground is popular among visitors seeking a truly off-the-beaten-path recreational experience away from crowds and modern conveniences. The campground provides direct access to wilderness trails including Black Lake-Horse Heaven Trail #214 and Six Lakes Basin Trail #218, which enter the Hells Canyon Wilderness from the southeast. Day hiking and lake fishing are the primary activities, with the pristine alpine setting offering a genuine backcountry experience. The access road to Black Lake Campground is steep and rough, requiring high-clearance vehicles and is not recommended for RVs, trailers, or low clearance vehicles. Campers must be prepared for primitive conditions with no potable water available. Sites are first-come, first-served for $10 per night, payable at the self-service pay station. The campground operates from July through October and is not maintained in the off-season.
