About
Smith Lake Campground is a small, rustic campground nestled on the shores of Smith Lake in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, just north of Bonners Ferry. This no-fee campground offers 7 campsites on a first-come, first-served basis, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious campers seeking a quiet lakeside experience. The campground provides basic amenities including vault toilets and drinking water available from a hand pump. A boat ramp provides easy lake access for fishing, and the day use area includes 3 picnic units for visitors. The campground sits at high elevation in Boundary County, and access depends on snowpack conditions. It typically operates from June through September when roads are passable. Smith Lake offers opportunities for fishing, swimming, and ice fishing in winter months when accessible. The remote location and limited number of sites create a peaceful atmosphere ideal for those seeking solitude in the Idaho backcountry. To reach the campground, travel north on US 95 from Bonners Ferry for approximately 5 miles, then turn right onto Smith Lake Road (County Road #36) and continue 2.3 miles to the lake and campground. Contact the Bonners Ferry Ranger District at (208) 267-5561 for current road and campground conditions before visiting.
