About

Boulder Meadows is a primitive horse camping area situated at 4,000 feet elevation in the Lower Kootenai River Region of Idaho Panhandle National Forests. The camp features 9 sites designed primarily for equestrians, with hitching rails provided for horses and pack animals. Facilities are minimal: vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water, picnic tables, or trash service. Campers must bring their own water and pack out all refuse. The camp serves as a hub for an extensive backcountry trail network. Boulder Meadows Trail #57 winds through the meadows for about a mile before joining Kelly Pass Trail #155, with both trails crossing Boulder Creek. From here, riders can access Timber Mountain Trail #51, Smythe Trail #515, and Iron Mountain Trail #180, reaching destinations like Divide Lake, Timber Mountain, Star Mountain, and Middle Mountain. Wildlife viewing opportunities are excellent, with moose, bears, elk, and deer frequenting the area. The trails offer stunning vistas of the meadows, Kootenai Valley, Selkirk Mountains, and views extending into Montana and Canada.
