About
Slough Creek Campground is one of Yellowstone's more remote and peaceful camping options, situated at 6,250 feet elevation at the end of a two-mile dirt road in the park's Northern Range. The campground's 16 sites are all reservable through Recreation.gov and best suited for tents and smaller RVs, with 14 sites accommodating rigs up to 30 feet (though sites may not be level). The location offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in Yellowstone. The nearby Lamar Valley serves as critical summer habitat for massive herds of bison and elk, which in turn attract predators including multiple wolf packs and grizzly bears. Visitors commonly spot elk, bison, deer, pronghorn, and coyotes, with occasional sightings of black bears, bobcats, cougars, and red foxes. Spring is particularly active for bear activity when elk are calving. The campground provides access to the popular Slough Creek Trail, which follows a historic wagon trail into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness beyond park boundaries. The trail begins with a steep climb before descending to picturesque meadows. Slough Creek itself is renowned for fly fishing. The remote location offers quiet nights with unobstructed stargazing and the possibility of hearing wolves howl. Each campsite includes a bear-proof food storage locker, and the campground has vault toilets and seasonal potable water.
