About
Sawmill Creek Group Campground sits in the temperate rainforest of Tongass National Forest on Baranof Island, about 7 miles southeast of downtown Sitka. The facility features one 30-person group site, three single tent sites, and two sites that can accommodate small RVs. Amenities include picnic tables, fire rings, garbage bins, a covered group picnic shelter, vault toilet, and bear-proof food storage lockers. No potable water is available; campers must bring their own or treat water from Sawmill Creek. The campground is accessible by vehicle from May 15 through November 1 via graveled Blue Lake Road. Year-round access is available by foot, bike, or cross-country skis. The Beaver Lake/Herring Cove Trail begins within the campground, and nearby attractions include Thimbleberry/Heart Lake Trails and Blue Lake. Brown bears are common in the area, so proper food storage is essential. The 14-day overnight stay limit per calendar year is monitored and enforced. There is no campground host, no firewood for sale, and pallet burning is prohibited. The group site costs $20 per night when reserved in advance through Recreation.gov; otherwise it operates first-come, first-served at no cost.
Directions
From downtown Sitka, follow Sawmill Creek Road 5.2 miles to Blue Lake Road. Turn left onto graveled Blue Lake Road and continue 1.5 miles to the Sawmill Creek Campground sign, then turn right to enter.
