About

The historic Silesca Cabin, originally constructed as a Forest Service ranger station between 1916 and 1936, sits on the rim of the Uncompahgre Plateau about 40 minutes southwest of Montrose. The cabin occupies a scenic meadow surrounded by spruce and aspen forest at an elevation of 9,200 feet, set back 100 feet from the main road for privacy. The cabin accommodates up to 6 guests across three bedrooms with six twin beds. Modern conveniences include electricity with 30-amp hookup, an electric stove and refrigerator, and a bathroom with flush toilet and shower. A wood-burning stove provides heat. Outside, guests have access to a fire ring and picnic table. Note that while the cabin has running water for cleaning and bathing, the water is not potable; guests must bring their own drinking and cooking water. Recreation opportunities abound in the area: hiking, mountain biking, single-track dirt biking, UTV and ATV riding, horseback riding, hunting, and wildlife viewing. Silesca Pond is a short walk north of the cabin. The cabin is located near Unit 61, a limited hunting area for Rocky Mountain Elk.

Directions

From Montrose, follow Highway 90 southwest. Watch for signs as the highway makes several turns weaving out of town. The pavement ends where the road climbs out of the Uncompahgre River Valley and enters BLM land. In 20 miles, enter Uncompahgre National Forest. Silesca Cabin is about a half-mile further on the left side of the road.
