About

Woods Lake Campground is nestled beside its namesake lake in a lush aspen forest within the Uncompahgre National Forest, roughly 8 miles west of Telluride. The campground offers 41 sites spread across three distinct loops: a main loop with pull-through sites, four double sites, and a group site; a dedicated equestrian loop with five sites, five paddocks, hay racks, and watering troughs; and additional standard camping areas. The large parking area at the horse loop doubles as a trailhead. The campground provides direct access to the Lizard Head Wilderness via the Woods Lake Trail and Lone Cone Trail, making it a prime staging area for backcountry exploration on foot or horseback. Mountain bikers and motorcyclists can reach the Wilson Mesa Trail just half a mile from camp. Woods Lake itself offers fishing within walking distance. The surrounding peaks of the Lizard Head Wilderness create a dramatic backdrop, and the quaking aspens deliver spectacular fall color. Facilities include vault toilets (currently under construction with portable toilets in place) and potable water from a hand pump. All sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. The campground operates seasonally from late spring through early fall, with opening and closing dates dependent on weather and snow conditions.
