About
South Rim Campground occupies a stunning perch at 8,400 feet elevation on the South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The campground is surrounded by scrub oak forests atop ancient hard rock, with deer, grouse, bears, and bobcats frequenting the area. Sites are fairly close together, partially shaded by tall shrubs, with bear-proof food storage lockers at each site. The campground has three loops: Loop A and C offer standard non-electric sites at $20/night, while Loop B provides 20 and 30 amp electric hookups at $34/night. Loop B accommodates RVs and trailers up to 55 feet combined length, though most sites average 30 feet. Loops A and C fit vehicles up to 23 feet combined. Vault toilets are available year-round, but potable water is only available mid-May through mid-October. There are no showers, dump station, or water hookups. Summer visitors can attend evening educational programs at the campground amphitheater. Winter activities include snowshoeing on Rim Rock Trail and cross-country skiing on South Rim Drive when the road is closed to vehicles.
Directions
From Montrose, take US Highway 50 east for 6 miles, then turn left onto Highway 347 and follow it for 6 miles into the park. About 0.3 mile past the entrance station, turn right onto the South Rim Campground road.
