About
Lone Cone Cabin is a historic 1936 Forest Service guard station situated in a large secluded meadow at 9,200 feet elevation within the Uncompahgre National Forest. The cabin sits surrounded by aspen and spruce forest with excellent views of Lone Cone Peak and remarkably dark night skies ideal for stargazing. Two bedrooms accommodate up to 8 guests: one room with two bunkbeds, another with a queen bed, plus a queen-sized hide-a-bed in the living room. The cabin features a flush toilet, shower, and fully equipped kitchen with electric oven/range, microwave, refrigerator, cookware, and utensils. Two woodstoves provide heat with firewood available on-site. Note that water comes from an untreated well and must be boiled for at least 5 minutes before drinking; guests should bring their own potable water. Power outages occur regularly during windstorms, which also disables the water system. A horse corral with feed bunk and water trough is located 150 yards south of the cabin for equestrian visitors bringing certified weed-free hay. The Lone Cone Trailhead providing access to Lizard Head Wilderness is a short walk away, and the surrounding area offers exceptional hunting, mountain biking, and OHV opportunities on an extensive network of forest roads.
