About

Five Fingers Campsites consist of three primitive hike-in sites located in Portage Valley within the Chugach National Forest. Accessed by a quarter-mile walk from the Five Fingers parking area, these sites serve as an excellent testing ground for backcountry camping gear before venturing deeper into the wilderness. The campsites are situated along the Trail of Blue Ice, a 4.5-mile trail that stays on the valley floor and connects major recreation sites in Portage Valley, including Moose Flats Day Use Area, Explorer Glacier Pullout, Williwaw Fish Viewing Platform, and the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center. The area offers opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and mountain biking. Amenities are extremely limited at this location. There is no potable water and no restroom facilities. Campers should come fully prepared with their own water supply and practice Leave No Trace principles.

Directions

From Anchorage, take the Seward Highway south to milepost 78.9. Turn onto Portage Glacier Road and drive southeast toward Portage Lake. The Five Fingers parking area is located along Portage Glacier Road, from which it is a quarter-mile walk to the campsites.
