About
Williwaw Campground sits in an idyllic setting beside Williwaw Creek near Girdwood, Alaska, within the Portage Valley of Chugach National Forest. As the largest of the two campgrounds in the valley with 60 sites, it serves as a prime base for exploring the area's glaciated landscapes and abundant wildlife. The adjacent Williwaw Salmon Viewing Area provides exceptional opportunities to observe spawning salmon in August through the creek's translucent waters. The campground connects to the Williwaw Nature Trail, which leads to the Williwaw Fish Viewing Platform, passes under the highway bridge, and follows the creek to a series of ponds before connecting to the Trail of Blue Ice. This trail accesses the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center and is popular among mountain bikers. Wildlife in the area includes moose, brown and black bears, mountain goats, lynx, bald eagles, and wolves. Portage Glacier and its icebergs on Portage Lake lie just east of the campground. Nearby attractions include the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, the town of Whittier, and Byron Glacier.
Directions
From Anchorage, drive 55 miles south on Seward Highway to Portage Glacier Road (milepost 78.9). The campground is located at mile 4.1 on Portage Glacier Road, approximately one mile from the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center.
