About

Shields River Dispersed Site is a small, primitive campground tucked into the Shields River drainage of the West Crazy Mountains, approximately 24 miles northeast of Wilsall on Shields River Road. The six-site campground provides a quiet base for exploring the rugged Crazy Mountains, with opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing in one of Montana's most scenic ranges. This is a true backcountry-style camping experience with minimal amenities. Each site has a picnic table, and vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water, trash service, or firewood. Campers should come fully prepared with their own water supply and plan to pack out everything they bring in. The access road can become difficult when wet, so checking conditions before travel is advised. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Due to the limited number of sites, arriving early is recommended during summer weekends and holidays. The 22-foot vehicle length limit restricts access to smaller RVs and trailers, making tent camping the primary use.
