Shields River Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. Opens June 16 and operates through December 1. First-come, first-served only.

About

Located 24 miles northeast of Wilsall in the scenic Shields River drainage of the West Crazy Mountains, Shields River Campground provides a remote camping experience on the Yellowstone District of Custer Gallatin National Forest. This primitive campground features 6 first-come, first-served campsites at no charge, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious campers seeking solitude. The campground operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with no trash services, and no potable water is available on-site. Vault toilets are provided for visitor convenience. The road can be challenging when wet, and visitors should call the ranger district for current road conditions before traveling. The campground can accommodate vehicles up to 22 feet and features a horse trailer turn-around area for equestrian visitors. The surrounding West Crazy Mountains offer opportunities for hiking, fishing in the Shields River, and wildlife viewing. The campground is situated in a forested setting that provides a true backcountry camping experience while remaining accessible by vehicle during the operating season.
