Halfmoon Campground offers an authentic mountain experience in the glacier-carved Crazy Mountains on the Yellowstone Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Located along the picturesque Big Timber Creek, this 12-site campground provides a perfect base for exploring the rugged wilderness of the East Crazy Mountains. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations, maintaining a traditional camping experience. Amenities include vault toilets, hand-pumped drinking water (available Memorial Day through Labor Day), picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. The access road is not suitable for vehicles longer than 32 feet, and maximum site dimensions are 24 feet by 60 feet, making this better suited for smaller RVs and trailers. Recreation opportunities abound in this scenic area. Hiking and horseback riding trails lead into the surrounding mountains, with nearby waterfalls providing scenic destinations. Big Timber Creek offers excellent fishing opportunities, and wildlife viewing is common—visitors may spot mountain goats while enjoying morning coffee at their campsite. Adjacent picnic areas are available for day use. Access is limited during fall and winter due to snow accumulation on the forest roads.
