About
Halfmoon Campground sits at the end of Big Timber Canyon Road in the eastern Crazy Mountains, on the Yellowstone Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest. The 12-site campground is positioned along Big Timber Creek, offering a scenic base for exploring this rugged mountain area. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, with vault toilets and seasonal potable water available. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. Potable water from a hand pump is available only from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Access becomes limited during fall and winter due to snow accumulation on Big Timber Canyon Road. The narrow, winding access road is not suitable for vehicles longer than 32 feet. Recreational opportunities include day hiking to nearby waterfalls, horseback riding, scenic viewing, and fishing in Big Timber Creek. The adjacent Halfmoon Picnic Area provides additional day-use facilities. A food storage order is in effect from March 1 through December 1 requiring proper storage of food and attractants due to bear activity.
