About
Crandall Creek Cabin is a traditional log structure located in the Shields River drainage, approximately 24 miles northeast of Wilsall and 52 miles from Livingston, Montana. Situated at roughly 6,400 feet elevation beneath the foothills of the Crazy Mountains, the cabin offers views of Target Rock and excellent stargazing. The surrounding area is home to bears, elk, deer, and moose. The cabin sleeps up to six guests in three bunk beds with mattresses. Amenities include a wood stove for heating, a two-burner propane cookstove, propane lantern, table with benches, and an outdoor campfire ring with picnic table. A wheelchair-accessible vault toilet is available. A stock corral accommodates up to four animals. Guests must bring their own water, bedding, cookware, propane canisters, and toilet paper. Firewood must be brought June 1 through September 30. Activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing in nearby creeks, and hunting in fall. Winter visitors can snowshoe, cross-country ski, or snowmobile. Street-legal ATVs and motorcycles may use main roads in summer. The cabin is accessed via a semi-primitive road requiring 4WD from June 16 to December 1. From December 2 through March 31, the last seven miles are unplowed, requiring self-propelled or snowmobile access.
Directions
From Livingston, travel north on Highway 89 to Wilsall. Turn right from Highway 89 onto Shields River Road. Follow Shields River Road until the pavement ends and turn right at the end of the pavement. Travel approximately 7 miles to a fork in the road, take the left fork towards Shields River Camp (approximately 2 miles to the camp). About 100 yards beyond the campground, take a left onto a gated road. The cabin combination code (in your confirmation letter) will open the gate. The cabin is located 200 yards down this road. High-clearance 4WD vehicle suggested. From December 2 through March 31, the last seven miles are not plowed; plan to ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile to the cabin.
