Crandall Creek Cabin

Open — Open year-round for reservations. From December 2 through March 31, the last seven miles of access road are not plowed; guests must ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile from the end of the plowed road to the cabin.

About

Crandall Creek Cabin is a traditional log rental cabin tucked beneath the foothills of the Crazy Mountains in the West Crazies area. This rustic structure replaced the historic Bennett Creek Cabin and offers basic accommodations for those seeking a backcountry experience. The cabin sits at approximately 6,400 feet elevation near several creeks and the Shields River, with majestic views of Target Rock from the front porch. The cabin provides vault toilet facilities but limited other amenities, so guests must bring most supplies and gear for their stay. Access requires navigating a semi-primitive dirt road, with four-wheel drive strongly suggested from June 16 through December 1. Winter access from December 2 through March 31 requires skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling approximately seven miles from where the plowed road ends. No off-road vehicles or motorcycles are permitted beyond the Shields River Loop gate during this period. The area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing in nearby creeks, hunting, horseback riding, and winter activities including snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Wildlife including bears, elk, deer, and moose inhabit the area. The cabin is located approximately 24 miles northeast of Wilsall and 52 miles from Livingston.

Directions

From Livingston, travel north on Highway 89 to Wilsall. Turn right from Highway 89 onto Shields River Road. Follow until pavement ends and turn right. Travel approximately 7 miles to a fork, take the left fork towards Shields River Camp (approximately 2 miles). About 100 yards beyond the campground, turn left onto a gated road. The cabin is 200 yards down this road. High-clearance four-wheel drive vehicle suggested. Winter access: ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile seven miles from end of plowed road.
