About

The Sherando Lake Group Picnic Shelter, also known as the Williams Branch Group Picnic Shelter, is situated within the Sherando Lake Recreation Area, often called the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The shelter sits a short walking distance from the 25-acre lower lake, which features a sandy beach, bathhouse with changing facilities and showers, and a designated swimming area. The spring and stream-fed lake stays refreshingly cool throughout summer. The recreation area offers extensive opportunities for fishing in stocked trout waters during spring and fall seasons, with both the lower 25-acre lake and upper 7-acre lake available. Only electric motors, canoes, kayaks, and similar boats are permitted on the lower lake. Multiple hiking trails provide options ranging from easy lakeside walks on the Lakeside and Cliff Trails to more challenging day hikes and backpacking trips via the Blue Loop Trail to Torry Ridge Trail and Bald Mountain. The Blue Ridge Parkway with scenic overlooks is just 3 miles up State Route 664. The group picnic shelter location provides convenient access to all recreation area amenities while offering a secluded setting for family reunions, scout groups, church gatherings, and other organized group events in a beautiful mountain forest environment.
