About
Shelter Ridge Campsite sits at the remote northern tip of Grand Island, a Congressionally designated National Recreation Area in Lake Superior off Munising, Michigan. This primitive backcountry site offers exceptional solitude, requiring either a 10.5-mile hike or bike ride from Williams Landing or expert-level paddling to North Beach on the island's exposed north side. The challenging water access demands respect for Lake Superior's weather, wind, and wave conditions. The site accommodates up to 6 people in a maximum of two tents. Amenities are minimal but functional: a fire ring, bear pole for mandatory food storage, benches, and a primitive latrine. Black bears inhabit the island, so all food and scented items must be stored on the bear pole. There is no potable water at Shelter Ridge; the nearest drinking water is at Juniper Flats, roughly 6 miles south. Campers should bring adequate water or be prepared to filter and treat from nearby sources. Grand Island features 300-foot sandstone cliffs, pristine beaches, dense hardwood forests, and inland lakes. The island is vehicle-free, with access only by passenger ferry from Grand Island Landing or private watercraft. Pack in all supplies and pack out all trash.
Directions
Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, approximately half a mile from Munising, Michigan. Take the passenger ferry from Grand Island Landing on M-28, about 3 miles west of downtown Munising. The ferry docks at Williams Landing on the island. From Williams Landing, hike or bike approximately 10.5 miles north via island trails to Shelter Ridge. Alternatively, paddle to North Beach on the island's north side and hike east on the Rim Trail approximately 100 yards to the campsite. The north side of Grand Island has exposed cliffs and dangerous water conditions requiring expert navigation skills.
