About
Gull Point Campsite sits at the far southern tip of Grand Island in Lake Superior, making it one of the most secluded camping experiences in the Hiawatha National Forest. Reaching this site requires a 9-mile hike from Williams Landing where the passenger ferry arrives. The effort rewards campers with solitude along dramatic sandstone cliffs and pristine shoreline. This single backcountry site accommodates up to 6 people in two tents. The site is equipped with a fire ring and bear storage (locker or pole), essential given the island's active black bear population. There are no restrooms at Gull Point, and water must be filtered or treated from Lake Superior or inland sources. No supplies or services are available on the island, so campers must pack in everything they need. Grand Island is vehicle-free, accessible only by passenger ferry, private boat, or kayak. A $5 per person recreation enhancement fee applies and is typically included in the ferry fare. During the off-season (mid-October through late May), reservations are not required but ferry service is unavailable.
Directions
Grand Island is located in Lake Superior, approximately 0.5 miles offshore from Munising, Michigan. Take the passenger ferry from Grand Island Landing on M-28, about 2.5 miles west of downtown Munising. From Williams Landing on the island, hike approximately 9 miles south to reach Gull Point. The island is also accessible by private boat or kayak. No vehicles are permitted on the island.
