About

Preservation Point sits at the remote northwestern tip of Grand Island National Recreation Area in Lake Superior, offering one of the most secluded camping experiences on the island. Located approximately 9 miles from Williams Landing where the passenger ferry arrives, this primitive tent site requires commitment to reach but rewards with exceptional solitude and proximity to the island's dramatic northwestern coastline. The site accommodates up to 6 people in two tents and provides basic amenities: a primitive latrine, fire ring, benches, and a food storage pole for mandatory bear-safe storage. No potable water is available at Preservation Point; the nearest source is approximately 6 miles south at Juniper Flats Group Campsite. Alternatively, campers can filter water from Lake Superior at North Beach, about 1 mile east. Kayakers should note that Preservation Point is not directly accessible by water; North Beach serves as the nearest landing point. Reservations through Recreation.gov are required from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Outside this peak season, walk-ins are permitted when the site is unreserved. All campers must pack out their trash, as no refuse collection exists on the island. Public vehicles are prohibited on Grand Island; all access is by hiking, biking, or boat.

Directions

Grand Island is in Lake Superior, approximately 0.5 miles from Munising, Michigan. Take M-28 to Grand Island Landing, about 2.5 miles west of downtown Munising (look for Grand Island NRA signs). Board the passenger ferry to Williams Landing on the island. From Williams Landing, hike approximately 9 miles via the island trail system to reach Preservation Point on the northwestern tip. Private watercraft may use the Williams Landing dock for loading/unloading only; kayakers can land at North Beach, about 1 mile east of Preservation Point.
