About
Shawnee Ohio River Campground opened in 2023 as Ohio's newest state park campground, developed from a former 18-hole golf course along the Ohio River. The $12.3 million project transformed over 200 acres within the 1,095-acre Shawnee State Park, often called the "Little Smokies" for its rugged Appalachian foothills landscape. All 80 campsites are paved full hookup sites with electric, water, and sewer connections on spacious, level asphalt pads. Five sites are ADA compliant, and the campground can accommodate RVs up to 90 feet. Each site includes a fire pit and picnic table. Recreational amenities are extensive. The signature feature is a one-mile kayak water trail created from restored golf course ponds, with kayak rentals available from the camp store. An 18-feature splash pad, 35,000 square foot dog park with obstacles and play features, two archery ranges, a bicycle pump track and skills course, outdoor fitness equipment, playground, and a two-mile walking/biking path along the Ohio River provide activities for all ages. The nearby marina offers boat ramp access, gas and diesel, transient and seasonal dock slips, and fishing along the Ohio River. The campground includes a camp store serving hand-dipped ice cream, bath and shower houses with laundry facilities, dump stations, and a shelter house with charcoal grill available for group rental. Native pollinator habitat with over 1,200 trees and 10 acres of prairie species surround the developed areas. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance through ReserveOhio.com.
