About
The North Wrangell High Country Shelter sits at the highest point along the North Wrangell Trail on Wrangell Island, at roughly 2,700 feet elevation. This primitive 3-sided shelter offers exceptional panoramic views of the mainland, surrounding islands, and mountain ranges. The remote alpine setting makes it a rewarding destination for experienced hikers willing to tackle significant elevation gain. Two trail options provide access to the shelter. The longer route covers 3.5 miles from the Rainbow Falls Trailhead, connecting via the Rainbow Falls Trail to Institute Creek Trail to North Wrangell Trail, with a total elevation gain of 2,500 feet. The shorter option is 2.6 miles from the North Wrangell Trailhead on Spur Road Extension with approximately 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Facilities are minimal as expected for a backcountry shelter. An outhouse is available on site, but there is no potable water. Hikers must bring all drinking water and pack out all trash. The shelter is also used as a winter destination for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing.
