About

Shady Cove Campground offers a primitive camping experience in the heart of the Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area along the Little North Fork of the Santiam River. The small 13-site campground provides access to numerous trails featuring scenic mountain vistas, cascading waterfalls, and majestic old-growth forests. Three Pools Day Use Site is located nearby, and the Little North Santiam Trail is accessible across the bridge from the campground. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit. Vault toilets are provided, but campers must bring their own drinking water as none is available on-site. The remote location offers a quiet, natural setting for those seeking a more rustic camping experience. Access is via gravel Forest Service roads from Mehama, approximately 18.5 miles northeast. The campground is typically open year-round depending on road conditions, though winter access can be challenging as roads are not maintained for snow and ice. Late season camping from September through October generally provides the best conditions.

Directions

From Salem, travel east on State Highway 22 to Mehama. At milepost 23, turn left onto Little North Fork Road and proceed 15.3 miles to the Forest Boundary. Continue on gravel Forest Service Road 2209 for 1.3 miles to the intersection of FS Road 2207. Turn right and continue 1.9 miles to Shady Cove Campground on the right.
