About

Schnaus Cabin sits in a scenic meadow surrounded by scattered pine trees at approximately 3,700 feet elevation in the Whitefish Range, near the Wild and Scenic North Fork of the Flathead River. The cabin is seven miles north of Polebridge and within the Glacier View Ranger District, bordered by Glacier National Park to the east and Canada to the north. The fully accessible cabin accommodates up to 12 guests with two double beds and a bunk bed on the main floor, plus twin beds in the loft. Rustic amenities include a propane cook stove, propane heater and lights, and a wood stove. Firewood is provided from October 1 through May 1. There is no drinking water or electricity, and guests must bring their own water supply. A vault toilet is available outside the cabin. Grizzly bears frequent the area, so all food, beverages, coolers, and garbage must be stored inside the cabin. Guests are responsible for packing out all trash and cleaning the cabin before departure. The majority of the road from Columbia Falls is gravel, so prepare for dusty conditions during the drive and at the cabin.

Directions

From Columbia Falls, travel north on Nucleus Avenue and turn east on Railroad Street at the stop sign. This becomes North Fork Road as it travels over the railroad overpass. Continue north on this gravel road for 42 miles to the intersection with Forest Road 10372. Look for the sign for Schnaus Cabin and turn east. Travel 0.3 miles, then turn north at the sign for Schnaus Cabin and follow the signs. The cabin is seven miles north of Polebridge.
