Schnaus Cabin is a rustic rental cabin located 42 miles north of Columbia Falls in the Flathead National Forest. Situated near the Wild and Scenic North Fork of the Flathead River in the Whitefish Range of the Rocky Mountains, the cabin sits in a meadow surrounded by scattered pine trees at approximately 3,700 feet elevation. A creek and ponds are located nearby, with the North Fork Flathead River just a short hike away. The fully accessible cabin accommodates up to 12 guests with two double beds and a bunk bed on the main floor, plus twin beds in the loft. It is equipped with propane cook stove, heater, and lights, plus a wood stove for additional heating. An accessible vault toilet is provided. The cabin is reached by vehicle with parking outside. Guests must bring all water, bedding, food, and camping gear. The gravel North Fork Road provides year-round access, though dust is common in summer. Summer activities include hiking, fishing, rafting, and wildlife viewing. Winter brings opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Elk, moose, and bears frequent the area. Polebridge Mercantile is seven miles south. Grizzly bears are active in the area, requiring proper food storage. Maximum stay is three consecutive nights with seven total days per calendar year.

Directions

From Columbia Falls, travel north on Nucleus Avenue and turn east on Railroad Street at the stop sign. This becomes North Fork Road as it travels over the railroad overpass. Continue north on this gravel road for 42 miles to the intersection with Forest Road 10372 and look for the sign for Schnaus Cabin. Go east for less than a half-mile and turn north at the sign for Schnaus Cabin.
