Special Weather Statement issued June 9 at 10:15AM MDT by NWS Missoula MT

June 9th, 10:15 AM — 6:00 PM

Widespread snow will impact the Glacier Park region above 5,000 feet tonight through Wednesday as a cold system moves through the area. Confidence is high for accumulating snow, with most areas seeing at least 2 to 4 inches of snow above 5,000 feet. Isolated snow amounts up to 12 inches will impact higher mountain peaks above 6,000 feet. Those heading into the backcountry and higher elevations should prepare for winter-like conditions. An elevated risk will exist for hypothermia.

About

Kintla Lake Campground is Glacier National Park's most remote frontcountry campground, located approximately 40 miles from the west entrance in the upper North Fork region near the Canadian border. The drive passes through the tiny community of Polebridge before continuing 14.3 miles on a narrow, rough dirt road to the campground on the shore of Kintla Lake. The campground offers 13 tent-only sites on a first-come, first-served basis. RVs and trailer combinations are not permitted due to the challenging access road. Each site accommodates up to 8 people and 2 vehicles, with a maximum of 2 tents per site. Sites include fire rings and picnic tables. Vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water are available during the summer season; during primitive camping periods water is not available. Due to its remote location, the campground is very quiet and rarely fills, making it an excellent choice for campers seeking solitude. Bear-resistant food storage lockers are provided, and all food and scented items must be stored properly. Firewood collection of dead wood on the ground is permitted in designated areas along Bowman Lake Road.

Directions

From the West Entrance at West Glacier, head north approximately 25 miles on the Outside North Fork Road to Polebridge. Continue through Polebridge and drive 14.3 miles on the rough, narrow Inside North Fork Road to Kintla Lake. The road is unpaved and slow; allow extra time. Vehicle combinations longer than 21 feet are not permitted.
