About
Savanna Campground is situated in the northcentral section of William O'Brien State Park, a 1,520-acre park along the St. Croix River about an hour from the Twin Cities. The campground offers 65 sites in a wooded setting, with 37 sites featuring electric hookups with 50 amp service. The park's location provides campers with access to diverse landscapes including rolling glacial moraine, riparian zones, restored oak savanna, wooded areas, and bogs. The park's extensive trail system allows for quiet exploration of the terrain, with opportunities for hiking in warmer months and cross-country skiing in winter. While Savanna Campground sits about a mile inland from the St. Croix River, the park provides easy access to the river for fishing, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. The St. Croix serves as an important migratory pathway, offering visitors diverse birdwatching opportunities and chances to observe mammals in their natural habitat. Established in 1947 as the first metro area state park, William O'Brien remains popular with weekend campers due to its proximity to the Twin Cities and quality amenities. The park is open year-round for camping, making it accessible to winter camping enthusiasts seeking snowshoeing and skiing adventures.
