About
San Antonio Campground is nestled along the San Antonio River in the Santa Fe National Forest at 7,600 feet elevation, surrounded by towering ponderosa pines and open forest meadows. This popular campground was completely rebuilt and reopened in August 2010 as a designated reduced-impact and recycle campground. The facility offers 20 single-family sites, with six sites featuring electric and water hookups suitable for trailers and RVs up to 35 feet. A paved walking trail runs alongside the river, providing excellent access for fishing rainbow trout, wildlife viewing, and wading on hot summer days. The campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the Jemez National Recreation Area. Visitors have easy driving access to several popular recreational sites including La Cueva Picnic Site, Spence Hot Spring Trailhead, Battleship Rock Trailhead, and multiple fishing sites along the San Antonio River. The area features some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest, with the diverse ecosystems providing habitat for Jemez Mountain salamanders, northern goshawks, Merriam's turkeys, and Abert's squirrels. The 163-mile Jemez Mountain Trail Scenic Byway passes through the area, showcasing amazing geological formations, ancient Indian ruins, and rich logging, mining, and ranching heritage. Visitors should come prepared for warm summer days and cool nights at this elevation.
