About

The Samuel P. Taylor Group Picnic Area is situated in a scenic redwood grove along Lagunitas Creek within Samuel P. Taylor State Park in Marin County. The picnic area, known historically as part of Camp Taylor dating back to the 1800s, provides a shaded setting under towering coast redwoods for group gatherings. Each picnic site includes tables and barbecue facilities. The location offers convenient access to the partially paved Cross Marin Trail, popular with bicyclists and families, as well as numerous hiking trails ranging from easy creekside walks to challenging climbs up Mount Barnabe. The park's 2,882 acres encompass diverse landscapes from shady canyon groves to oak-studded grasslands. Wildlife commonly seen includes black-tailed deer, raccoons, and various bird species. The creek supports threatened populations of coho salmon and steelhead trout, with creek access restricted December 1 through June 15 annually to protect spawning fish. The group picnic area is located near the main Camp Taylor entrance, approximately 15 miles west of San Rafael on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.
