Steep Ravine Environmental Campground occupies a stunning marine terrace on the western slopes of Mount Tamalpais, perched on bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Located roughly 1.5 miles south of Stinson Beach in Marin County, the campground offers seven primitive walk-in sites that provide exceptional coastal scenery and access to tide pools at Rocky Point. The sites are basic but well-equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and food lockers. Primitive toilets and water faucets serve the campground. The campground operates on a reservation-only basis through ReserveCalifornia, with bookings available up to six months in advance. Each site accommodates a maximum of five people and one vehicle. The adjacent Steep Ravine Cabins, a separate lodging option, use a lottery-style reservation drawing system due to their extreme popularity. Site #7 is designated as ADA-accessible with nearby accessible parking and restrooms. The location serves as a prime spot for whale watching, tidepooling, and accessing coastal trails. Fishing is permitted from the beach. The campground's proximity to Stinson Beach and connection to the broader Mount Tamalpais trail network make it a sought-after destination for Bay Area outdoor enthusiasts.

Directions

From Highway 101 in Mill Valley, take the Highway 1/Stinson Beach exit. Follow Highway 1 (Shoreline Highway) west and north toward Stinson Beach. The Steep Ravine entrance is approximately 1.5 miles south of Stinson Beach on the ocean side of Highway 1. Look for the gated entrance; a combination for the gate lock is provided with your reservation confirmation.
