Sam Owen Campground occupies a scenic peninsula on the east side of Lake Pend Oreille in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. At 2,000 feet elevation, the campground sits within an open forest of pine and cedar, sharing the peninsula with the Sam Owen Game Preserve. The lake itself spans 82,088 acres with 125 miles of shoreline, providing ample opportunities for water-based recreation. The campground draws visitors with its sandy swimming beach, on-site boat ramp and dock, and excellent fishing for kamloops, Dolly Varden, northern pike, trout, and catfish. The half-mile Sam Owen Trail #4 is accessible and leads to a beautiful vista of Owens Bay with benches for taking in the view. Wildlife enthusiasts frequently spot deer throughout the area, and the location is ideal for bird watching. Sam Owen offers 80+ non-electric campsites across multiple loops, flush toilets, drinking water from hand pumps, and a dump station. A group picnic shelter with electricity and lights is available. The campground is managed by Scenic Canyons, which offers kayak and paddleboard rentals on-site. Bear activity is common in the area, requiring proper food storage. The Pend Oreille Scenic Byway provides additional exploration opportunities nearby.

From Sandpoint, take State Highway 200 east 21 miles. Turn right on Peninsula Road (County Road 1028) and continue 1 mile to the recreation area.
