About
Sam Brown Horse Campground is the only designated horse camp on the Wild Rivers Ranger District of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Located in the heart of the Illinois Valley's remarkable biodiversity, the campground offers 7 camping units: 5 single sites and 2 double sites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire pit, and access to horse facilities including corrals and areas for hobbling or high-lining. The campground is primitive with a vault toilet but no potable water or trash service. Campers must bring all water needed for themselves and their animals, and pack out all garbage. Pets are allowed but must remain on leash. Campfires are permitted only in developed fire pits, and fireworks and OHV/ATV use are prohibited. The area provides excellent access to multiple trail systems for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking. Trails accessible from or near the campground include Briggs Creek Trail #1132 (trailhead located in campground), Taylor Creek Trail, Onion Way Trail, Secret Way Trail, and Dutchy Creek Trail. The Elkhorn Mine Jeep Road is also nearby for those seeking longer rides.
Directions
From Interstate 5, take Merlin Exit to Merlin/Galice Road approximately 12 miles to the Briggs Valley Road (Forest Road 2500). Follow Forest Road 2500 approximately 15 miles to Forest Road 2512, turn right and the campground will be on the right just past Briggs Creek bridge.
