About
Sam Brown Horse Campground is the only dedicated equestrian campground on the Wild Rivers Ranger District of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Situated in the biodiverse Illinois Valley, this remote horse camp offers 5 single campsites and 2 double campsites, all equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. The campground is located just off Forest Road 2512, adjacent to the regular Sam Brown Campground and near the Briggs Creek bridge. The campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the area's extensive trail system, with access to trails suitable for horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, and motorcycles. The Sam Brown Tie Trail is accessible directly from the north end of the campground. The area's rich biodiversity and remote setting provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and experiencing the natural beauty of southwest Oregon's mixed-conifer forests. Facilities are primitive: vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water or trash service. Campers must bring adequate water supplies and pack out all garbage. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Check-in is at 2:00 p.m., check-out at 12:00 p.m., with quiet hours enforced between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Maximum stay is 14 consecutive days.
Directions
From Interstate 5, take the Merlin exit to Merlin/Galice Road for approximately 12 miles to Briggs Valley Road (Forest Road 2500). Follow Forest Road 2500 approximately 15 miles to Forest Road 2512, turn right and the campground will be on the right just past Briggs Creek bridge.
