About
Greenville Recreation Area occupies a unique location on the northern end of Wappapello Lake, built on the original site of the historical Old Greenville City. The spacious campground was completely renovated in 2019, upgrading all 106 campsites to full hookups with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections. Each site features a concrete 16x40-foot pad, accessible fire ring/grill, picnic table, and lantern post. History enthusiasts can explore the Memory Lane trail, which winds through the foundations and streets of the old city that was relocated one mile north after a 1939 flood. The three-mile Greenville Trail connects the modern city to the campground and is open year-round for hiking and biking. The day use area includes 14 picnic sites, a shelter, boat ramp with courtesy dock, playground, basketball court, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits. Wappapello Lake offers excellent fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, white bass, and channel catfish. The project encompasses 45,000 acres in the southeastern Ozark foothills, with winding, wooded shoreline, secluded coves, caves, gravel bars, and rocky bluffs along the St. Francis River. The area hosts annual events including the Black Powder Rendezvous, Old Greenville Days, and Halloween Boo Bash. Nearby attractions include Lake Wappapello State Park, Sam A. Baker State Park, and Mingo Wildlife Refuge.
