About
Salt Chuck East Cabin is a remote modified A-frame wilderness cabin situated on Kupreanof Island on the east side of the Duncan Salt Chuck within the Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness. The cabin accommodates up to seven people with two wooden bunks and a sleeping loft, and is equipped with a table, benches, and a clean-burning oil heater that requires guests to bring their own kerosene or No. 1 heating oil. The cabin overlooks expansive saltwater grass flats with old growth spruce and hemlock forest behind it. A rowboat and oars are provided, though guests must bring their own life jackets and may bring a small outboard motor. Fishing is excellent with steelhead in April and May, coho salmon in August and September, and trout from June to September. The primitive Portage Mountain Loop Trail connects the cabin to Portage Bay and Petersburg Lake, though portions are difficult to follow. Access is exclusively by float plane (15 miles from Petersburg) or boat (40 miles from Petersburg). Boat access requires a 14-foot tide, and the rapids at the Salt Chuck entrance are navigable only at high slack tide, up to 45 minutes after high tide. Guests must bring all supplies including drinking water, sleeping bags, cook stove, cooking gear, food, and enough heating oil. Wildlife in the area includes waterfowl, grouse, deer, and black bears.
