About
Salt Chuck East Cabin sits within the Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness, overlooking expansive saltwater grass flats backed by old-growth spruce and hemlock forest. The modified A-frame structure is equipped with a clean-burning oil heater, table and benches, and a sleeping loft with two single bunks accommodating up to 7 guests. An outhouse with a pit toilet is provided, but there is no potable water; visitors must treat water from a nearby creek or bring their own supply. Fishing is a primary draw, with abundant steelhead in April and May, coho salmon in August and September, and trout from June through September. A rowboat and oars are available at the cabin, though guests must bring their own life jackets. The Portage Mountain Loop Trail departs from the cabin, connecting to Portage Bay (Goose Cove) and Petersburg Lake, though the section between Goose Cove and Petersburg Lake is primitive and difficult to follow. Wildlife viewing opportunities include waterfowl, grouse, Sitka black-tailed deer, and black bears. Hunting is permitted per state and federal regulations. Guests must bring all supplies including sleeping bags, cooking gear, heating oil (#1 stove oil or kerosene, approximately 1 gallon per day), and must pack out all garbage.
Directions
From Petersburg: 15 air miles by float plane or 40 water miles by boat. Boat access requires a 14-foot tide and the rapids at the Salt Chuck entrance are navigable only at high slack tide (up to 45 minutes after high tide). Located on USGS topographic map Petersburg D4.
