West Point Cabin

West Point Cabin sits near the mouth of Portage Bay on Kupreanof Island, just around the point from Fredrick Sound. Built in 1994, this modified A-frame structure offers a tranquil base for exploring one of Southeast Alaska's premier whale-watching areas. The waters of Fredrick Sound and Stephens Passage serve as primary feeding grounds for migratory humpback whales. The cabin provides two single bunks and a large sleeping loft accommodating up to seven guests. Amenities include a wood stove for heating, wooden table and benches, cooking counter, axe/maul, and a mooring buoy for boat anchorage. The surrounding terrain features mixed spruce and hemlock forest with large expanses of gravel beach ideal for hiking. Anglers can target king salmon in May and June, coho from August through September, and halibut in Fredrick Sound. Hunting is permitted per state and federal regulations. Be aware this is extremely remote wilderness; black bears and deer inhabit the area, and visitors should practice bear safety and prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions.
