Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK

February 8th, 1:57 PM — 4:00 PM

After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.

About

Kah Sheets Lake Cabin is an accessible, modified A-frame that was built in 1989 on the southeast end of Kah Sheets Lake at 156 feet elevation. Located on the south end of Kupreanof Island in southeastern Alaska, the cabin provides access to a secluded location where fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant. The cabin and facilities are fully barrier-free, including the outhouse, dock, and connecting boardwalk trails. Kah Sheets is a Tlingit term meaning "by the fisheries," and the area lives up to its name with excellent salmon and trout fishing available right outside the cabin door. Two small rowboats with oars are provided for lake access. The cabin is situated in an open area along the lake shore near the outlet, surrounded by a mixture of muskeg meadows and forest. The area's abundant muskegs support a variety of berries and wildflowers, while wildlife viewing is particularly good for bears and waterfowl. The Kah Sheets Lake Trail begins behind the cabin and traverses 2.75 miles through muskeg and forest to Kah Sheets Bay. Two spur trails lead to sections of the creek, with the upper spur following a boardwalk to a viewing platform. Access is by float plane (22 miles from Petersburg) or by boat and hiking trail combination (24 miles from Petersburg by boat, then 2.75-mile hike). Note that an 18-foot tide is required for direct boat access to the trailhead, and in fall, winter, and early spring, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface preventing float plane landings.

Directions

Access by float plane is 22 miles from Petersburg. Alternatively, access by boat 24 miles from Petersburg, then hike 2.75 miles from Kah Sheets Bay to the lake. An 18-foot tide is required for direct boat access to the trailhead. Refer to USGS topographic map Petersburg C4.
